Piano
Piano instruction is offered for all ages in the form of private lessons or group classes. Voluntary recitals are
held in December and June. Students may also elect to enter the Piano Guild auditions held at our facility each spring.
Individual study is offered year round and consists of a thirty or forty-five minute lesson followed by thirty minutes
in the music lab. Student preferences are taken into account in planning a course of study in a variety of styles, including
jazz, popular and classical. Technique and music theory support and accelerate the learning process. Piano parties for ages
6 to 12, held two times a year, allow for informal performing, learning games and socialization.
Group classes
are offered in the fall semester, the spring semester and during the summer session. Classes are groups of 3-4, closely matched
in age and level. Students learn solid rhythm and ensemble skills as well as comfort in playing for others. Learning games
are popular in classes.
Harp
Private Harp instruction is offered for ages 6 and up. The school
owns a harp which may be used to facilitate “trying out” a new instrument. Our harp program is offered during
the summer, however, arrangements may be made for winter study.
Clarinet, Flute, Saxophone, Violin, Viola,
Guitar, Ukulele
Individual study is offered year round and consists of a thirty minute lesson followed by thirty
minutes in the music lab. Student preferences are taken into account in planning a course of study. Technique and music theory
support and accelerate the learning process. Voluntary recitals are held in December and June.
Voice
Private voice instruction is offered primarily for junior high and high school students as well as adults. Voice lessons
are based upon the individual student’s needs and may include popular and classical literature. Correct breathing techniques
and development of a bel canto vocal line are emphasized along with proper singing diction in English and other languages.
Confidence and overall performance skills are stressed.
Computer Lab
Lab is an integral part of
music study at the school. For most students, this takes place in the thirty minutes following a lesson. Although computer
theory programs provide the heart of theory study and drill, students may be found practicing on digital keyboards or listening
to a tape or CD of a piece in progress. Computerized chord practice and ear training is found on a digital piano. Various
software applications allow study of rhythm, note reading, musical terminology, scales, chords and chord progressions, and
for composing music.
Music Theory Classes
Music Theory Classes are offered for teen and adult
musicians. There are two levels: Theory 1, Basic Music Theory; and Theory 2, The Theory of Modern Music. Each level is covered
in a series of 8 classes during a quarter, and each is offered twice per year, in the fall and again in the spring. Acceptance
in either theory class is by instructor permission.
Workshops
Workshops are announced before the
coming school year. A variety of music workshops are set up for students of the Academy of Music and Arts, The Piano School,
and the cost is included in the yearly tuition. Outside students may also, for a fee, join the workshops appropriate to their
current knowledge and with approval of the workshop teacher. Some workshops which have been held and others suggested are:
songwriting, composition, building sight-singing skills, basic piano for singers, guitar circle, jazz theory, crash course
in music theory fundamentals, string ensemble, playing for church or synagogue, accompanying, and playing in a rock or jazz
band.
Theater
Drama and musical theater instruction provides a systematic study of the art of
acting, coaching for specific roles, and preparation for auditions.
Private lessons are offered for teens and
adults who need preparation for monologues or acting an audition song for professional and/or college auditions.
Small group lessons are offered for students ages 5 and up. In 8 classes per quarter, or during summer theater camp, students
work on acting skills appropriate for the students’ levels. The students also create props, sets and other materials
necessary to put a show together. The classes culminate in a presentation for family and friends, and also the opportunity
to perform in the community.
Art
Art classes are offered for children, teens and adults. In 8
classes per quarter, drawing, painting (all media) as well as photography composition are taught. Students are given individualized
attention.
